Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen Lunch Review

Happy #tastytuesday friends! It’s been a hot second since I updated my blog with allergy friendly reviews and tips (October 22 to be exact…). Life had gotten the better of me in my full-time job, and some personal stuff happened as well, so my blog kind of dropped of my priority list. However, I am back at it, and I have decided to set aside time every Tuesday to ensure that I am consistent with my blog posts for you all!

As I was thinking about which restaurant I wanted to review in my first post of the new year, I kept thinking about how I wanted to start off with a hidden gem, somewhere not everyone thinks to eat. Then, it came to me: Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom (Let’s call it Skipper Canteen for short because, what a name!)!

The Skipper Canteen is a new-er restaurant in  Magic Kingdom and was designed based on the Jungle Cruise ride in the park. You can find it on the right hand side of Adventureland right as you cross the bridge into the land. You can catch references to the ride throughout the restaurant, and everything is “punny,” including the cast members and the menu. Skipper Canteen is also 1 dining credit on the Disney Dining Plan for both lunch and dinner. I had heard great things about the restaurant, and so my family and I decided to try the restaurant on our November 2019 trip.

We had a 12:00pm reservation and only waited about 5 minutes until our reservation was called. The inside of the restaurant was airy and bright, with lots of beautiful colors. We can all thank the iphone 11 Pro Max for this amazing wide shot of the whole restaurant from our table. As we were walking to the table, our cast member turned to us and said “I’d like to share some highlights about the restaurant.” She then pointed upwards and said, “See? Those are high lights.” I almost died laughing, as I love punny jokes. I knew this was going to be a great dining experience!

As per usual, I asked for an allergy friendly menu (I had also already noted my allergies in the Advanced Dining Reservation online). I was given the allergy menu that was full of puns that had me giggling even before I ordered.

As you can see, there were not many options for me on the menu that were gluten, dairy, and egg free. I could have asked to speak with the chef about different options, but I wanted to order off the menu first and see what I could come up with based on the obvious options. I decided to start with the Jungle Green Salad with a sub of Italian dressing instead of the pepper-yogurt dressing.

The salad was good, but very basic and nothing super special. I was surprised by the amount of vegetables that they provided in the salad, as some restaurants can skimp on the veggies.

For my main course, I decided to try Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew, as I LOVE a good seafood stew with a coconut broth. This dish was naturally allergy friendly for me.

I was very pleased with the dish! There was a lot of protein, including white fish. Everything was cooked well and extremely tender. Plus, I loved the rice underneath. I would definitely order this dish again!

For dessert, I decided to try Panna-Connie’s Congo Lime Delight.

The panna cotta was gorgeous and visually stunning. Taste-wise, it was great if you like the stronger flavor of lime and more savory desserts. It was great overall, but I wanted to it to be a little more sweet. This dish is also advertised as gluten and dairy free, and so I had asked the cast member about the eggs, as I did not know where the egg was in the dish. She spoke to the chef and noted it was in the cookie, so I got this dish without the cookie. To be honest, I don’t think it was missing much without it, unless the cookie did provide more sweetness to the dish.

Overall, Skipper Canteen was a great restaurant and one I will eat at again in the future! I think my favorite restaurant in Magic Kingdom is Be Our Guest, so that will not be beat for the time being, but Skipper Canteen was a great experience with good food.

Thanks for following along! Here’s to living our best and most delicious Disney lives! <3
