Kona Cafe Breakfast Review

Happy #tastytuesday friends!! Today we are headed to Kona Cafe for breakfast! Kona Cafe is a table service restaurant that is located on the second floor of the lobby at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and I had heard amazing things about breakfast here, and so when a last minute reservation popped up during my last staycation at The Cabins at Ft. Wilderness, I knew I needed to try it. Of course, I was so obsessed with the food that I forgot to take pictures of the restaurant. I’ll make sure to edit this post once I go back, because honestly it was so good that I already have another dining reservation booked in June!

Because this review will be a little more food picture-heavy, I figured I’d start out with the iconic Tonga Toast (pictured above) my husband ordered it and said it was amazing and that he would order it again. It did not suit my food allergies (so sad) but I couldn’t help but share because look how amazing it looks!!

Alright, back to the allergy friendly side of things! As per usual, I made sure to note my dairy, gluten, and egg allergies in the My Disney Experience app when I made the reservation, and also made sure they were added to the reservation when I completed mobile check-in through the app as well. Above, you can see the allergy friendly menu that I took screenshots of from the My Disney Experience app. I also included the first page of the regular menu here for you to see because there is a plant based dish on the regular menu called the Plant-Based Loco Moco, which is going to come up later in this review…hint hint, nudge nudge. However, it is not listed on the allergy friendly menu.

To start, my husband and I decided to try the Freshly Brewed Joffrey’s Coffee Hawaiian Kona Maragogype Press Pot. This coffee is a signature beverage of this location, and the press pot makes for a strong coffee flavor overall. I asked for a side of almond or soy milk and was given almond milk, which I happily stirred into my coffee. 8/10 for me, just because I am not the biggest fan of Joffrey’s coffee, but I thought this one tasted pretty good!

Like I said, it was important that I showed you about the Loco Moco…because I ordered it to try in addition to my Mickey waffles! The chef was able to prepare the dish dairy, gluten and egg free, and I was so so so excited to try it in addition to my beloved allergy friendly Mickey waffles.

Starting with the Loco Moco, if you are a fan of trying something new or love Hawaiian and Polynesian inspired food, this is a MUST for you to try. The egg substitute on top really had me guessing if it was a real egg or not (which, it was not), the coconut milk was soaked into the rice giving it a nice, sweet texture, and the pico de gallo on top added a little bit of sharpness and spiciness to the dish. All in all, the Loco Moco is a hidden gem breakfast in my opinion, including presentation (swipe to see the inside). 9/10 for me!

Now, at this point, if you don’t know that allergy friendly Mickey waffles are my allergy friendly breakfast of choice (like everywhere- table service and quick service), then you are either new to this blog or this is my first breakfast post you are reading. There is very little that Walt Disney World can do to make these waffles even better…until, strawberry sauce!! That’s right- the strawberry sauce topping for the Tonga Toast is dairy, gluten, and egg friendly, and so our server brought some over to the table for me to have with my waffles. Let me tell you…it was a GAME CHANGER! 12/10 for me for the amazingness that is allergy friendly waffles with strawberry topping.

Honestly, do not sleep on Kona Cafe. The prices are decent and you get a good amount of food for what you are paying for. Plus, it’s a great restaurant to go to on your Magic Kingdom day, as you can walk, take the boat, or ride the monorail (from the Transportation and Ticket Center for the latter) to Magic Kingdom when you are done eating.
